In the penultimate first-season episode " Collectors ," the rogue nightmare Corinthian hosts a horrifying serial killer convention while simultaneously manipulating Rose Walker, the Dream Vortex, to challenge Dream. As Rose rescues her brother Jed from abusive foster parents, her powers threaten the stability of the waking and dream worlds. Morpheus intervenes at the hotel to unmake the Corinthian, while forcing the attending killers to face their true, monstrous natures. The episode concludes with a tense standoff, as Dream warns Rose that her existence as a Vortex necessitates her destruction to protect the universe.
