The Old | Guard

Originally a 2017 graphic novel by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández, The Old Guard subverts the standard invincible-hero narrative. Unlike typical superhero stories where powers are an unalloyed gift, The Old Guard presents immortality as a weary, melancholic burden. The story follows a covert group of centuries-old mercenaries led by Andromache of Scythia (Andy). While the 2020 Netflix film adaptation reached a global audience, both versions center on a core paradox: the team protects a world that refuses to change for the better, even as they themselves are "history's crankiest grandmothers".
