The story begins at a robot trade show where Professor Farnsworth introduces the , a new, highly advanced model that is perfectly efficient and requires no fuel or maintenance. Bender, feeling threatened and inferior to the new model, refuses to undergo a state-of-the-art upgrade. Instead, he flees to a desert island to escape the modern world.
On the island, Bender discovers a group of —including a tape-recorder unit and a cartridge-based robot—who have also been discarded by society. He decides to receive a "downgrade," stripping himself of his high-tech components and rebuilding himself entirely out of wood. Emboldened by his new low-tech lifestyle, Bender leads his fellow "obsolete" robots in a rebellion against technology, culminating in an attack on the Planet Express headquarters.
