In 1949, Baba entered a phase called the "New Life," where he gave up all positions and possessions to live as a "companion" and "helpless seeker" alongside his close disciples (mandali). This period highlighted the importance of complete reliance on God and the value of total surrender.

Baba identified himself as the same soul that appeared previously as Zoroaster, Rama, Krishna, Buddha, Jesus, and Muhammad. He spent decades traveling across India and the West, working with the "masts" (God-intoxicated souls), the poor, and the lepers. He taught that the path to God is not found in complex rituals or religious dogma, but in the elimination of the ego.
