It was the second part of a split archive, a ghost in a machine. He had found the first part, ALbd.7z.001 , on an encrypted drive belonging to his late mentor, a man who claimed to have discovered a way to "compress human memory." But the first part was useless without the second.

The file sat on Elias’s desktop like a digital landmine: ALbd.7z.002 .

"I have you right here," Elias whispered, dragging the second file into the directory.

A single text file appeared on his desktop: README_OR_FORGET.txt .
